Career, Technical and Adult/Community Education's Volunteer Program is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America and provides assistance to teachers and adult students in a wide variety of adult education programs throughout Broward County. Volunteers attend an orientation workshop and are then placed at one of our 24 adult and community schools and centers or an off-campus adult education site. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of two hours a week on a pre-arranged day and time. Volunteers assist adult students, on an individual or small group basis, to gain competence in reading, English/language, and mathematics in the following programs.
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program is designed to develop literacy skills necessary for successful employment and citizenship. The ABE Program provides instruction for adults who are performing at or below the ninth grade level.
The Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program provides English language instruction for Limited English Proficient adults.
The Adults with Disabilities (AWD) Program is a comprehensive program for adults with various special needs. Instruction in independent living and life coping skills is provided for students with mental, physical, emotional, auditory or visual impairments.
The Literacy Education for Households Program provides an opportunity for parents to improve basic skills, English proficiency, and parenting skills while their children participate in developmentally and age appropriate educational activities.
The General Educational Development (GED) Program is designed for adults who are performing at the ninth grade level or higher.
